All Post Offices Open New Year’s Eve, Many Closing Early

Noon set as day’s final mail collection

PITTSBURGH — All Post Offices will be open New Year’s Eve in the Pittsburgh District, encompassing 150-154, 156 & 260 ZIP Code areas, but many will shorten retail lobby hours to enable retail employees to spend more time with their families. Regular mail delivery for Dec. 31 will be unaffected by the change.

“As many businesses close early New Year’s Eve,” said Pittsburgh Acting District Manager Elizabeth Schaefer, “the number of customers visiting our lobbies greatly diminishes. We view this as an opportunity to afford retail employees more time with their families by closing retail operations in many locations early Dec. 31.”

Schaefer said noon will be the last collection for mail deposited in most blue collection boxes for Dec. 31 processing. Revised hours will be posted at each Post Office. Mail will be collected from blue boxes in front of any Post Office that will remain open until 4 PM at that time. Commercial customers are asked to check with their Bulk Mail Acceptance Unit for Dec. 31 hours of operation. To obtain the phone number of a specific Post Office, customers may call 1-800-ASK-USPS.

Post Offices will be closed Jan. 1, 2009. Express Mail will be delivered on New Year’s Day and regular mail delivery will resume Jan. 2.

An independent federal agency, the U.S. Postal Service is the only delivery service that visits every address in the nation — 146 million homes and businesses. It has 37,000 retail locations and relies on the sale of postage, products and services to pay for operating expenses, not tax dollars. The Postal Service has annual revenues of $75 billion and delivers nearly half the world’s mail.
