Public Service Announcement

Tax Day Hours for Tuesday, April 15

A limited number of Post Offices throughout Pittsburgh and the Wheeling area of West Virginia will have later window and collection services on Tax Day, April 15.

Customers planning to mail returns over 16 ounces with postage stamps must present these packages to a postal employee for proper cancellation in accordance with Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) security regulations.  Packages of this size may not be dropped in a collection box.

As an added convenience, 16 Pittsburgh area Post Offices have the new, “quick, easy and convenient”, Automated Postal Center (APC) in their lobbies.  APC’s allow customers to conduct the majority of the transactions that can be handled at the traditional counter with a debit or credit card using the simple, touch screen kiosk.  APC’s enable customers to weigh and mail letters and parcels and purchase stamps.  APC’s dispense postage in any amount for Express Mail, Priority Mail, First-Class Mail and Parcel Post services.  The APC also provides mailing information, ZIP Code lookup, and Delivery Confirmation services.  Most are located in 24 hour lobbies (check local Post Office).

Offices with Automated Postal Machines are: Coraopolis, Greensburg, McMurray, Blawnox Branch, Brentwood Branch, Castle Shannon Branch, Northside Main Office, McKnight Branch, Monroeville, Penn Hills, Pleasant Hills, Squirrel Hill, Upper St. Clair, Washington, and Wexford Post Offices.

When depositing a return in a neighborhood collection box, mailers are encouraged to check posted collection times to ensure you have deposited the return before the last scheduled pickup.

All returns collected by midnight, by posted times, will receive an April 15, 2007 postmark.  Express Mail will ensure a faster arrival at the IRS.  For taxpayers sending original receipts, registered mail is recommended for security.

Mailers are reminded to have correct postage on their mail.  Many tax forms weigh more than one ounce and require additional postage.  To avoid delay, take your tax forms, in the envelope, and have it weighed for proper postage at your local post office.  The tax agencies will not pay additional postage due.

Editor’s note: See attached chart for names and locations of offices with later hours for April 15.  Please take note of final collection times listed.

An independent federal agency, the U.S. Postal Service is the only delivery service that visits every address in the nation — 146 million homes and businesses. It has 37,000 retail locations and relies on the sale of postage, products and services to pay for operating expenses, not tax dollars. The Postal Service has annual revenues of $75 billion and delivers nearly half the world’s mail.
