Collection boxes in restricted areas to be pulled during G-20 Summit

Downtown boxes to be removed for public safety and security purposes

PITTSBURGH—In response to the restrictions in place for the upcoming G-20 Summit, the Western PA District of the U.S. Postal Service will be pulling a number of collection boxes within the Golden Triangle and areas anticipated to be affected by G-20 events. The public is reminded that at anytime they may hand-off their outgoing mail to mail carriers who will be delivering to affected areas during the summit.

“Our intent is to provide service to the community with minimal interruptions,” said Western PA District Manager Charles P. McCreadie. “At the same time we will follow the guidelines provided to us for the safety and security of the public.”

For added customer convenience, Automated Postal Centers (APC’s) are available at select Post Office locations, and many of the APC’s are located in 24-hour lobbies. Using a credit or debit card, these self-service kiosks enable customers to conduct business at their convenience. APC’s enable customers to:

  • Buy the same self-adhesive stamps provided through ATMs.
  • Weigh, calculate and purchase postage in amounts for items weighing up to 70lbs.
  • Send items via Express, Priority and First Class Mail, as well as by Parcel Post services.
  • Look up ZIP Codes and obtain Postal Service mailing information.
  • Obtain Express Mail, Certified Mail, and Return Receipts
  • Purchase Delivery Confirmation service.
  • Obtain a purchase receipt.

An independent federal agency, the U.S. Postal Service is the only delivery service that reaches every address in the nation, 149 million residences, businesses and Post Office Boxes, six days a week. It has 34,000 retail locations and relies on the sale of postage, products and services, not tax dollars, to pay for operating expenses. Named the Most Trusted Government Agency five consecutive years by the Ponemon Institute, the Postal Service has annual revenue of $75 billion and delivers nearly half the world’s mail.
