BACKGROUND:
It is estimated that breast cancer strikes one in nine women and is the leading cause of death, from all causes, in women between the ages of 35 and 54. Every three minutes a woman is diagnosed with breast cancer and every 12 minutes, a woman dies from breast cancer.*
The 55-cent, self adhesive Breast Cancer Research stamp is valid for postage at the 44-cent First-Class letter rate, with net proceeds contributed to breast cancer research. Donations are given to the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Medical research Program of the Department of Defense (DoD). Both the NIH and DoD conduct breast cancer research and were identified as recipients of the funds by Congressional legislation. Since its inception in 1998, the semi-postal BCR stamp has raised $66.7 million for breast cancer research.
