Postal Service Provides Income Tax Filers Several Options in Portland Metro Area & Other Oregon Locations on Tuesday, April 15, Deadline

The U.S. Postal Service urges customers to avoid Tuesday, April 15, deadline-day crowds by mailing their income tax returns early and ensuring each envelope carries the proper postage.  Be sure to purchase stamps during regular business hours for your tax returns at local retailers, contract postal units or the Post Office.

For those who decide to wait until the deadline date, Post Offices in the Portland metropolitan area will collect and postmark tax returns until midnight on Tuesday, April 15, 2008, from blue Postal Service collection boxes in front of 24 designated Post Offices, Stations and Branches (a list of these locations is at the end of this news release).  These collection boxes will be marked with special yellow signs verifying midnight pickup in front of designated Post Offices only.  (All other blue collection boxes without a yellow sign will be picked up at their posted, regularly-scheduled times.)

"The best option for those who have correct postage and just need the April 15th postmark,” said Portland Postmaster Shawneen Betha, “is to avoid the crowds by using the blue collection boxes marked with yellow signs and located in front of designated Post Offices in the Portland area.”

An independent federal agency, the U.S. Postal Service is the only delivery service that visits every address in the nation — 146 million homes and businesses. It has 37,000 retail locations and relies on the sale of postage, products and services to pay for operating expenses, not tax dollars. The Postal Service has annual revenues of $75 billion and delivers nearly half the world’s mail.
