PORTLAND, OR — Larry Rutter will be sworn in as Philomath’s new postmaster during a 2:30 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 18, ceremony at the Philomath Post Office, 1140 Applegate St.
The public is invited to attend and light refreshments will follow the ceremony.
Rutter will receive the oath of office from Marilee Spitsnogle, manager of Post Office Operations for the Portland District. Philomath mayor Chris Nusbaum is also expected to be on hand.
“I am very excited to be given the opportunity to serve as Philomath’s Postmaster,” Rutter said. “We have a wonderful team of employees in Philomath and I look forward to working with them to serve our customers and to be involved in our community.”
Rutter will celebrate his 24th year with the Postal Service the day before he is installed in Philomath. He began his USPS career as a distribution clerk in Salem on Oct. 17, 1983. In 1999, he was promoted to supervisor, Customer Service, a role he filled at two Salem Post Office stations. He also served briefly as acting postmaster in Monmouth earlier this year.
An alumnus of Central High School in Independence, Rutter served in the U.S. Navy from 1977 to 1981.
To help commemorate Philomath’s 125th birthday this Saturday, Rutter and the Philomath Post Office will offer a special Oct. 20 postmark. The postmark may be applied to envelopes, cards or other items bearing First- Class Mail postage stamps and will be available at the Post Office for 30 days beginning Monday, Oct. 22.
