USPS announces four postal stations will not be consolidated

Portland’s Solomon Station & University Station in Eugene still under review

The U.S. Postal Service’s Portland District announced today that no changes will be made at four of the six Oregon postal facilities it has been studying for possible consolidation.

The four locations no longer being considered for consolidation are:

  • Portland’s Brooklyn Station, 1410 S.E. Powell Blvd.
  • Portland’s Central Station, 204 S.W. 5th Ave.
  • Salem’s Brooks Station, 5000 Brooklake Rd. N.E.
  • Salem’s Oak Park Station, 3284 Lancaster Dr. N.E., Suite D

This decision does not preclude studies at a future date for these or other locations, district officials said.

Still under consideration are Portland’s Solomon Station, 620 SW Main St., Suite 101, and Eugene’s University Station, 1222 E. 13th Ave. The public input process regarding possible consolidation is already under way at both locations via customer questionnaires.

A final decision on the two stations will not be made until Oct. 1, at the earliest, according to USPS Portland District officials. The earliest either would be consolidated into other nearby postal facilities would be late in 2009.

Current economic conditions and technological advances such as email are combining to change the way people use and access services and products offered by the United States Postal Service, a self-supporting independent federal agency. Ongoing mail volume and revenue losses demand that the USPS review all postal operations to find opportunities to provide service more efficiently.

An independent federal agency, the U.S. Postal Service is the only delivery service that reaches every address in the nation, 149 million residences, businesses and Post Office Boxes, six days a week. It has 34,000 retail locations and relies on the sale of postage, products and services, not tax dollars, to pay for operating expenses. Named the Most Trusted Government Agency five consecutive years by the Ponemon Institute, the Postal Service has annual revenue of $75 billion and delivers nearly half the world’s mail.
