On December 18, 2006, President George W. Bush signed into law, Public Law, PL 109-411, signed December 18, 2006, by President George W. Bush designating the Sheridan Station Post Office as the “Dewey F. Bartlett” Post Office. This legislation was introduced in the United States Senate (S.1820) by The Honorable James M. Inhofe; the bill was co-sponsored by Senator Tom Coburn. Congressman John Sullivan introduced companion legislation in the House of Representatives (H.R. 4051) in 2006. Sullivan’s bill was co-sponsored by the entire Oklahoma Congressional delegation. The legislation overwhelmingly passed both houses before going to President Bush for signature.
Dewey F. Bartlett was a devoted public servant to his community, the state, and the nation. After graduation from Princeton University in1942, he served valiantly in the Marine Corps during World War II and earned the Air Medal as a combat dive bomber pilot. His political career began in 1962 with election to the Oklahoma state senate. In 1966, he succeeded Henry Bellmon as Oklahoma's second Republican governor and in 1972 he won the race for a seat in the United States Senate, a post he maintained until 1979, the year of his death.
“Dewey F. Bartlett was a strong advocate for conservative values, a war veteran and a public servant for Oklahoma and the nation,” said Congressman Sullivan when he introduced the legislation in the House of Representatives. “He was a true representative of Oklahoma values, leadership and drive and I am pleased that we are able to honor him in this way.”
