Mansfield Post Office Adjusts Hours for Tax Night
Mailing Tips Offered
MANSFIELD — The Mansfield Main Post Office, 200 North Diamond Street, will have window service until midnight on Tuesday, April 15th, the official deadline for tax return mailings. The Postal Service encourages mailers to mail early in the day.
Here are a few helpful tax mailing tips:
- The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) recognizes the inexpensive First-Class letter postmark as proof that a tax return was mailed on time. If you require further proof you should use Certified Mail with a return receipt.
- Try to mail as early in the day as possible. Taxpayers can avoid the annual last-minute rush to the post office by simply mailing the tax return in a local mail collection box. However, customers need to check the final pick up times posted on the box.
- The Postal Service will cancel EVERY piece of First-Class Mail that is deposited correctly before midnight to ensure every U.S. taxpayer's return is postmarked April 15th.
- Customers who hand-address tax return envelopes should be sure to write or print neatly, double check the mailing address and include a return address.
- Want to make sure your return gets to the IRS fast? Use Express Mail.
- If a tax return feels heavier than one ounce, it's a good idea to weigh it at the nearest post office -- the IRS will not pay additional postage and penalizes for late payment. Also, FAA rules require that stamped tax returns weighing 13 ounces or more must be mailed at a post office.
For taxpayers sending original receipts without copies, Registered Mail is recommended for the ultimate peace of mind. It costs a little more--but it's secure. In fact, it's so safe the Hope diamond was sent to the Smithsonian via Registered Mail.
Helping celebrate this year's tax night event are The Whiteamire Clinic, Jones Potato Chips, Crossroads, The Eatmor Bundt Cake Co., and the Customer Advisory Council.
