Background:
In 1938, Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings became famous when her novel “The Yearling” was published. The following year, Rawlings won the coveted Pulitzer Prize for the novel. Rawlings editor, Maxwell Perkins, inspired Rawlings to write the book, instructing her to write about she knew from her own life, after previously rejecting several other projects she had submitted to him for his review. “The Yearling” recounts the story of a young boy who adopts a baby deer or a fawn as a pet, naming it “Flag.” The setting is in the animal-filled Florida backwoods. Rawlings home was in Cross Creek, Florida.
