The Trip Starts Here…

Special Sunday Hours for Passports at 24 Upstate Post Offices

Some travelers roll their clothes, some stack their garments. No matter how they pack a suitcase, most travelers now pack a passport or the wallet-sized passport card.

To start busy travelers on their way, 24 post offices will open for passport-only services from 10 am until 2 pm on Sunday, June 1. On-site photos are available.

Today, more than 74 million Americans now have valid U.S. passports. Nationwide, there are more than 9,000 locations to secure a passport. Nearly two-thirds are post offices. Postal officials note that expanded acceptance opportunities provide valuable community services as more Americans seek passports.

The new passport card may again boost the passport market.

The wallet sized card is valid for land and sea crossings between the US and Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean and Bermuda.  The card has the same lifespan as passport book: 10 years for an adult, five for youth 15 and younger.

Postal officials note that passport forms will be available at all locations. Applicants may also download passport forms from usps.com, the Postal Service website.

Each applicant needs to present proof of US Citizenship by supplying a certified birth certificate with a registrar's raised, embossed, impressed or multicolored seal. Others may need to obtain a consular report of birth abroad or a naturalization certificate.

Those applying also need proof of identity which can include a previous U.S. passport, a Naturalization Certificate, a valid Driver's license, a Government ID or Military ID issued to military personnel. All passport applicants also must provide a Social Security number, including infants.

Department of State indicates that passport processing currently takes about four weeks. Expedited requests are available at additional cost.

An independent federal agency, the U.S. Postal Service is the only delivery service that visits every address in the nation — 146 million homes and businesses. It has 37,000 retail locations and relies on the sale of postage, products and services to pay for operating expenses, not tax dollars. The Postal Service has annual revenues of $75 billion and delivers nearly half the world’s mail.
