NT Post Office Honors Employees

Past, Present and Future

NORTH TONAWANDA — The North Tonawanda Post Office values its employees. In 2007, the office achieved the highest award given by OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) for workplace safety when they achieved Star status under VPP (Voluntary Protection Programs) and was awarded a OSHA “Star Among Stars” National recognition award for a best recognized work practice. To commemorate their one year Star achievement and showcase their ongoing commitment to workplace safety, a tree was planted on the grounds in honor of postal employees - past, present and future. The planting was also done in conjunction with OSHA sponsored Workers Memorial Day on April 28, in remembrance of workers who have lost their lives or been injured on the job.

"Every employee is an integral part of our postal family and the community we serve," said North Tonawanda Postmaster Norbert Rzeszutek. "We are committed to keeping each other safe in the workplace. We had the “Past” workers that built the foundation, the “Present” workers that have demonstrated their commitment to safety and to the “Future” employees to keep the commitment to safety growing strong.”

The North Tonawanda safety committee coordinated the efforts to obtain and dedicate the tree. “We are hoping that the tree demonstrates to our future employees our commitment to safety and we promise to build upon that commitment as the tree grows”, said letter carrier and safety committee chairman David Piwtorak.

The tree was provided by the town as part of the We Grow initiative in response to the 2006 October Storm tree recovery efforts. The National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) Branch 661 purchased the plaque dedicating the tree to the North Tonawanda postal employees.

An independent federal agency, the U.S. Postal Service is the only delivery service that visits every address in the nation — 146 million homes and businesses. It has 37,000 retail locations and relies on the sale of postage, products and services to pay for operating expenses, not tax dollars. The Postal Service has annual revenues of $75 billion and delivers nearly half the world’s mail.
