South New Berlin Postmaster Wins National Honors

Growth Award Recognizes Outreach That Works

Roger Barnhart, Postmaster of South New Berlin in Chenango County, was named as one of 43 Postmasters, managers, and supervisors a winner of the Postal Service’s Growth Award for its 2007 fiscal year.

The award — symbolizing excellence in community outreach — is presented to winners each spring   It recognizes a body of work that includes achievement of retail goals, new revenue, community outreach and overall teamwork with internal and external customers of the Postal Service. 

Working with small business customers, winners like Mr. Barnhart generated millions of dollars in new business for the Postal Service.

“This year’s 28,000-plus applicants represent the highest participation in the history of the program,” Deputy Postmaster General Pat Donahoe said.  Applicants compile documentation throughout the year that measures the success of their outreach.

Mr. Barnhart was the sole Growth Award recipient in the Albany District of the Postal Service. 

Other winners in New York State including postmasters in Greene and Ulster Counties.  Presentations of the awards coincide with state and regional conventions for the National Association of Postmasters, the League of Postmasters and the National Association of Postal Supervision, providing peer recognition for postmasters, managers and supervisors who lead the effort to connect with small business and household users.  

In addition to his community outreach, Mr. Barnhart serves as a member of the Albany District’s Letter Carrier Food Drive Committee.  On May 10, carriers in the region collected more than 554,000 pounds of food in the annual spring collection.  Nationwide, carriers tallied 70 million pounds of donated food items.

The Postal Service's Albany District reaches more than 3.5 million postal customers served by 720 Post Offices in an area that stretches from the Massachusetts and Canadian borders west to Waterloo and south to Binghamton and the Southern Tier.
