Green Corner Consumer Outreach to Demo a Greener Future

What:

To mark Earth Week, the United States Postal Service and New York City Department of Sanitation officials are partnering on a consumer outreach effort and setting up Green Corner public information booths to show New Yorkers how to reduce, recycle, and rethink the use of America’s resources.

Who:

Postal Service and NYC Department of Sanitation public information officials

When:

10:30 a.m. , Thursday, April 24, 2008

Where:

James A. Farley Main Post Office Lobby

421 Eight Avenue

New York, New York 10199-9998

Background:

Public information officials will be manning booths to share important environmental tips on how individuals and businesses can all pitch in to help reduce, recycle, and rethink the use of America’s resources.

Online demonstrators will also be showing the public the newly launched usps.com/green landing page. The new page is being launched to raise awareness of the Postal Service’s eco-friendly products and services, as well as recommend “green” practices for residential and commercial mailers. One of the more interesting features of the new landing page is an interactive skip-the-trip calculator which enables users to figure out the cost and energy saving benefits of skipping-the-trip to the Post Office and using USPS.com.

As a leader in recycling for over 20 years, the Postal Service is committed to delivering the mail in an eco-friendly manner. Examples of just a few environmental initiatives include: pioneering the use of alternative fuel-capable vehicles, supporting local recycling programs, and offering eco-friendly products and services. In addition, the Postal Service is working with customers to reduce mail that's undeliverable, and partnering with other delivery companies to move mail and packages on shared transportation, thereby saving on energy costs and consumption.

An independent federal agency, the U.S. Postal Service is the only delivery service that visits every address in the nation — 146 million homes and businesses. It has 37,000 retail locations and relies on the sale of postage, products and services to pay for operating expenses, not tax dollars. The Postal Service has annual revenues of $75 billion and delivers nearly half the world’s mail.
