Triboro District Announces Postal Service Hours on Tax Night April 15th

FLUSHING, NY — The Postal Service Triboro District (Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island and the 110 ZIP Codes of Western Nassau County) has 40 Post Offices (list on pages 2 & 3) open past 5 p.m. on Tuesday, April 15, 2008 for tax payers to mail their last minute tax returns. The list of Triboro District Post Offices with hours after 5 p.m. is at the end of this release. At these Post Offices open after 5 p.m., customers are advised to bring their returns into the Post Office to obtain the April 15 postmark from a sales associate. Post Office Collection boxes will be emptied according to the times listed on them.

Customers can obtain certified or registered mail proof of mailing acceptable to the IRS and acquire a postmarked mailing receipt. An electronic return receipt is also available. Instead of receiving a green postcard in the mail signed by the recipient, customers receive a proof-of-delivery letter as an e-mail attachment. The letter includes the date and time of delivery and an image of the recipient’s signature. After purchase, customers must visit usps.com to enter the e-mail address to which they want their return receipt (electronic) sent.

The Postal Service suggests the following tax mailing tips:

Make sure you have proper postage, especially if you have extra forms or schedules. The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) will not accept tax filings without postage or with insufficient postage. The IRS returns all tax filings with insufficient postage to the sender, who is then charged with late-payment penalties. It costs 39 cents for the first ounce and 24 cents for each additional ounce. One ounce is about four pages.
If you use a non-IRS labeled envelope, make sure you have the proper IRS address. Also, put your return address in the upper left-hand corner.
Mail early in the day if you can, so you can save yourself a trip to the late collection locations and avoid traffic and last-minute rush.
Don’t use an office postage meter. The IRS doesn’t accept private postmarks as proof of timely filing.
If you are depositing a tax return on April 15th in a blue Post Office collection box, be sure to mail it before the latest collection time posted on the box.
