MEDIA ADVISORY:
Postal managers discuss local mail processing proposals in three sites

WHAT:
This week, Postal Service managers will hold meetings to explain three proposals which consider the consolidation of some operations at the Watertown Post Office and some operations of the Processing and Distribution Facilities in Utica and Binghamton with the Syracuse Processing and Distribution Center.

WHO:
Michael Haggerty, Acting District Manager, Postal Service's Albany District
Timothy Leonard, Lead Plant Manager, Albany District
David Desrosiers, Consumer Affairs Manager, Albany District
Local postal officials from each jurisdiction

WHEN:
Each program will run from 4:30 pm until 6:30 pm.

  • Tuesday, May 19 — State Office Building, 207 Genesee Street, Utica,
  • Wednesday, May 20 — Dulles State Office Building, 317 Washington Street, Watertown,
  • Thursday, May 21 — Binghamton City School District's Community Room, 164 Hawley Street, Binghamton

DETAILS:
The Area Mail Processing proposal supports consolidating the weekday outgoing mail processing operations that are currently being performed at each of the above named offices by taking advantage of available processing capacity at the Syracuse Processing and Distribution Center, located on Taft Road in North Syracuse, in order to increase efficiency and improve productivity.

While no decisions have been reached, Postal Service managers will give an overview of the reasons for the proposal and its possible outcomes, and will listen to community input and concerns.

The Postal Service's Albany District reaches more than 3.5 million postal customers served by 720 Post Offices in an area that stretches from the Massachusetts and Canadian borders west to Waterloo and south to Binghamton and the Southern Tier.

An independent federal agency, the U.S. Postal Service is the only delivery service that reaches every address in the nation, 149 million residences, businesses and Post Office Boxes, six days a week. It has 34,000 retail locations and relies on the sale of postage, products and services, not tax dollars, to pay for operating expenses. Named the Most Trusted Government Agency five consecutive years by the Ponemon Institute, the Postal Service has annual revenue of $75 billion and delivers nearly half the world’s mail.
