Some Mail Processing Operations To Leave Binghamton
BINGHAMTON — In a continuing effort to improve productivity and increase efficiency, the Postal Service announced plans to move some mail processing operations and related processing equipment from the Binghamton Processing and Distribution Facility to the Syracuse Processing and Distribution Center. The transition is expected to be completed by January 2010.
Postal officials said local service standards for mail will not be affected by the move. Retail and delivery services to businesses and residences in Binghamton and the Southern Tier will not change.
Some affected career employees may be reassigned to the Syracuse Processing Center or to other vacant positions.
According to Albany District Manager Edward F. Phelan, Jr., “The move makes sense. This consolidation will help keep mail processing costs down by using available capacity at the Syracuse plant and will contribute toward the Postal Service’s goal of increasing efficiency and improving productivity.”
Mr. Phelan added that “I am confident the transition will be smooth and transparent to our customers because of our excellent employees in this postal district.”
The Postal Service's Albany District reaches more than 3.5 million postal customers served by 718 Post Offices in an area that stretches from the Massachusetts and Canadian borders west to Waterloo and south to Binghamton and the Southern Tier.
The Binghamton Processing and Distribution Center is located at 115 Henry Street.
