Syracuse Post Office, State Fair
To Deliver World Record Attempt
Fairgoers can attempt Guinness World Record
For Most Postcards Sent, In One Day, From One Site on Saturday, Sept. 5

SYRACUSE—The Syracuse Post Office joins with the New York State Fair in an official attempt to break a Guinness World Record for the most postcards sent in one day from one location.
“What better place to try a world record than at our own New York State Fair, with thousands of fairgoers to join the fun,” explained Syracuse Postmaster Gail Weeks. Previous record mailings of postcards were held in Haverhill, Massachusetts, with 4,976 mailed in July 2009 and in China’s Luoyang City, with 4,493 mailed in April 2009.
The record breaking attempt will be staged at the Fair’s Main Gate on Saturday, September 5 from 8 am to 5 pm.
According to Postmaster Weeks, who will certify the final number of postcards collected during the challenge, each card that enters the count must include an address, postage and a message in a postcard format.
“We’ll be happy to take your letters, cards or other items to mail that Saturday, but we will only be selling postcards and stamps for the record attempt,” she explained. “This will be a special State Fair Station, not a full service post office.”
The attempt is already recorded with Guinness World Records. Results from this record breaking effort will be passed on to their London office with additional documentation, she explained.
Postcards will receive a special one-day postmark, celebrating Record Breakin’ Station, prepared with the support of the Syracuse Stamp Club.
Postcards will be offered on site, noted Ms. Weeks, supplied by the Scotsman Pennysaver and Dupli Graphics, both members of the Central New York Postal Customer Council.
“Bring your own postcards or use those that we have available but you won’t want to miss this record breaking attempt at the State Fair this year,” Ms. Weeks explained. “And don’t forget to send a postcard to yourself, as a keepsake of your participation in a Guinness World Record attempt.”
Standard postage for a postcard is 28 cents. Oversized postcards – those exceeding 4-1/4 inches by 6 inches by inches – require 44 cents.
