New Yorkers Asked to Help Stamp Out Hunger

New York, NY - Officials kicked-off the 17^th Annual National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) Stamp Out Hunger food drive in Manhattan at a 10:00 a.m. event on Thursday, April 30 at the West Side Campaign Against Hunger Food Pantry at the Church of St. Paul and St. Andrew at 263 W. 86th Street, New York, NY 10024. To help combat hunger, New Yorkers are asked to drop-off non-perishable food items in special Stamp Out Hunger collection bins in postal lobbies in Manhattan and the Bronx from May 2 through May 9. Non-perishable donations like canned meats and fish, canned soup, juice, pasta, vegetables, cereal, and rice are suggested. All donations to the Stamp Out Hunger drive are given to local food banks whose shelves are usually running low at this time of year after the fall and winter holiday donations are depleted.

Entering its 17th year, long-time supporters of the NALC Stamp Out Hunger food drive include: the U.S. Postal Service, Campbell Soup Company, West Side Campaign Against Hunger, City Harvest, the Food Bank of NYC, Feeding America(formerly America’s Second Harvest—the Nation’s Food Bank Network), local United Ways, Cox Target Media and the AFL-CIO Community Services Network. Since 1993, the Stamp Out Hunger food drive has collected 909.3 million pounds of food for community food banks throughout the nation.

In most suburban communities in the United States, postal carriers have vehicles and can pick-up the food donations. Accordingly, residents In participating suburban communities in Long Island, Westchester, New Jersey, and other across the country can leave non-perishable food items at their mailboxes for the Stamp Out Hunger food drive on Saturday, May 9. Due to the population density, Manhattan and the Bronx residents are asked to deposit their food donations at the special Stamp Out Hunger food bins in the lobby of their local Post Office.
