Postal Service to hold Public Meetings on Mail Processing Studies
Queens, NY — The U.S. Postal Service will hold two public meetings to discuss its proposals to move some mail processing operations from the Staten Island Processing and Distribution Center and the Queens Processing Distribution Center to the Brooklyn Processing and Distribution Center.
The first public meeting will be held April 29, 2009 at Susan E. Wagner High School, 1200 Manor Road, Staten Island, NY 10314, from 7:00 – 9:00 p.m.; and the other meeting will be held May 6, 2009 at Bayside High School, 32-24 Corporal Kennedy Street, Bayside, NY 11361, from 7:30 – 9:30 p.m. Summaries of the proposals, the meeting agendas and presentation materials will be made available to the public on usps.com prior to the meetings.
With the deep decline in mail volume due to current economic conditions, the Postal Service has an excess of employees and equipment in some mail processing operations. Two concurrent studies were begun on February 10 between the Staten Island, Queens and Brooklyn Processing and Distribution Centers to determine the feasibility of consolidating redundant operations and to see if any efficiencies and cost savings would be achieved.
The studies results support consolidating some mail processing operations that are currently being performed at the Staten Island Processing and Distribution Center and the Queens Processing and Distribution Center by taking advantage of available processing capacity at the Brooklyn Processing and Distribution Center in order to increase efficiency and improve productivity.
While no final decision has been reached, Postal Service managers will give an overview of the reasons for the proposals and the possible outcomes, and will listen to community input and concerns. Summary of the proposals, a meeting agenda and presentation materials will be made available on usps.com.
