Las Vegas Postal stations studied for possible consolidation

Desert Inn, Garside, Strip, Huntridge and King candidates for study

Five Las Vegas postal stations and retail units are currently being studied for possible consolidation with nearby facilities.

The facilities under study are:

  • Desert Inn Retail Unit, 2478 Desert Inn Rd.
  • Garside Station, 1801 S Decatur Blvd.
  • Huntridge Station, 3115 E. Olive St.
  • King Station, 1801 N Martin Luther King Rd.
  • Strip Station, 3100 S. Industrial Rd

A nationwide study of facility consolidation is currently underway, with 3,100 offices initially considered. The study is prompted by unprecedented volume and revenue declines. The Postal Service has seen an 15 percent decline in volume and losses are expected to top $6.5 billion this year.

The study entails economics of consolidation and a number of other factors including customer access to services, traffic, transportation and retail services. The consideration and study of a facility doesn't in any way constitute a final decision, which isn't expected for several weeks.

“We are looking for inefficiencies or redundancies in all of our operations,” said Postal Spokesman David Rupert. “This is part of the process that allows us to formally review the needs of our customers and the facilities that serve them.”

Written customer comments are encouraged and can be made through a survey available at retail windows of the affected offices.

An independent federal agency, the U.S. Postal Service is the only delivery service that reaches every address in the nation, 149 million residences, businesses and Post Office Boxes, six days a week. It has 34,000 retail locations and relies on the sale of postage, products and services, not tax dollars, to pay for operating expenses. Named the Most Trusted Government Agency five consecutive years by the Ponemon Institute, the Postal Service has annual revenue of $75 billion and delivers nearly half the world’s mail.
