Background:
Don Zimmer and his daughter Donna Zimmer Mollica are no strangers to baseball. This year marks Don’s 60th year in Major League Baseball. Don, the scrappy middle-infielder, whose Major League playing career spanned 12 seasons; beginning in 1954 with the Brooklyn Dodgers, and for over 35 years as a coach and manager in the Major Leagues, is currently a Senior Advisor for the first place Tampa Bay Rays. His daughter Donna and her husband David and their daughter Whitney, a member of the UMass and the Stratford Brakettes softball teams, are longtime residents and generous supporters of Windham youth baseball.
Windham is home to a town recreation complex, Griffin Park, funded primarily by generous donations. A central component is a Little League field dedicated to baseball legend Don Zimmer, as he and his family have generously assisted the Little League in town over many years.
The Postal Service has a long standing tradition of honoring special people, places and events with commemorative stamps. With this presentation the Postal Service recognized the career of Don Zimmer and the contributions he and his family have made to the children and the community of Windham.
