Manchester city mail carrier aids stricken accident victim
MANCHESTER—Steve Logan a city mail carrier was just about at the end of his downtown Manchester walking route early this week when out of the corner of his eye he saw a car drifting across lanes on busy Elm Street, then hit a tree. “I started to walk across the street to see if the driver was alright, when he got out of the car, red faced and indicating to me that he couldn’t breathe,” said Logan. “So, I turned him around,” he said, and using the Heimlich maneuver he was training on as a member of the New Hampshire Air National Guard, “and gave him four or five tugs.” “Whatever was causing the breathing difficulties came out and he said he was alright.” said Logan
At that point the 21 year veteran of the U.S. Postal Service was about to call 911 when he spotted a police cruiser coming down the street and flagged it down. He then continued on to finish his mail route. When he returned to his office he told his supervisor Diane Schunemman about the incident. She expressed great admiration for what Steve did. Steve said simply, “I was in the right place at the right time and am just glad it ended well.”
NH/VT District Manager Debbie Essler said, “We hear often of heroic actions by postal family members, and each time it speaks volumes about the dedicated people with whom we work. Congratulations Steve, great job. We’re all very proud and privileged to work with someone like Steve.”
