Hillsborough NH Post Office Dedicated to Slain Police Officer Jeremy Todd Charron
Hillsborough NH—The Hillsborough Post Office, at 11 Central Street, was dedicated to Police Officer Jeremy Todd Charron. Last year legislation was introduced in the Senate by U.S. Senator John E. Sununu, co-sponsored by Senator Judd Gregg, to name the post office after the former Hillsborough native and Epsom Police Officer who was slain in the line of duty. The legislation was signed into law by the President at the end of last year.
Charron was born on March 18, 1973 and grew up in Hillsborough. He was a graduate of the Hillsboro-Deering High School where he was elected the class president. Following graduation he joined the U.S. Marine Corp where he served from 1992 to 1996. Upon leaving the military, Jeremy joined the Epsom Police Department.
On August 24, 1997, Officer Charron was responding to a report of a suspicious car in Webster Park, which contained two sleeping men. While talking with one of the men, the individual pulled out a gun and shot him. Patrolman Charron returned fire until he collapsed, but none of the shots hit the suspect, though each hit the getaway vehicle. Both suspects escaped and shortly afterwards attempted to rob a convenience store. Officers arrived at the scene of the robbery and arrested the suspects following a brief shootout. Although Officer Charron was wearing a bullet-resistant vest, one bullet did hit an unprotected area and he died from his wounds. Officer Charron was 24-years old.
Hosted by the U.S. Postal Service and Senator Sununu at Hillsboro-Deering High School, the dedication ceremony was attended by members of the Charron family, police and military representatives and featured the U.S. Marine Drum and Bugle Corp from Washington D.C. Senator Sununu said, “Jeremy Charron was a United States Marine and a committed law enforcement officer. The dedication of the Hillsborough Post Office in his name will ensure that we permanently honor both his service and his sacrifice. On behalf of the Town and Jeremy’s family, I am thankful to have played a role in helping to pay tribute to an American hero.”
Senator Gregg stated, "Today’s dedication of the Post Office in Hillsborough honors the life and service of Officer Jeremy Charron. Though there is no way to repay his ultimate sacrifice, this dedication is a way for the Granite State community to show our appreciation and recognize his important and unfailing commitment to making our neighborhoods and our state a safer place for our families. This Post Office will serve as a daily reminder of the brave and selfless service of Officer Charron."
Jim Adams, the newly retired District Manager for the U.S. Postal Service, and coordinator for the event, said “Jeremy epitomized service to his nation and the community. The Postal Service is honored to name the Hillsborough Post Office after this young man who was willing to give the last full measure of devotion carrying out his duties as a member of law enforcement.”
A plaque dedicating the Hillsborough Post Office in the name of Officer Charron will be mounted in the lobby of the Central Street postal facility.
