U.S. Postal Service Recognizes Cabela’s At 2008 National Postal Forum

ANAHEIM, Calif. — The U.S. Postal Service recognized Cabela’s with its Creative Business Solutions Award for the company’s commitment to a successful business partnership with the Postal Service. At each National Postal Forum, a select group of Postal customers is acknowledged and recognized for their contributions to the continued success of the mailing industry.

The Creative Business Solutions Award, one of three “best in class” awards presented annually at the Forum, recognizes customers who have demonstrated creativity by finding new ways to use mail to drive significant business results. Winners in this category have taken calculated risks by using the mail in new and different ways to help achieve their company’s business objectives with successful, quantifiable results.

Cabela’s created a unique First-Class Mail package, which resembled an ‘animated jewel’ box and contained a gift card and promotional information.  The gift card enabled the recipient to select a collector’s copy of the catalog, and to order quality outdoor equipment through their catalog, the internet, by phone or at a retail location.  The use of First-Class Mail with Delivery Confirmation reduced Cabela’s bottom line shipping costs by 25 percent. The reaction to the ‘animated jewel’ box evoked a brand image of Cabela’s as the ultimate provider of outdoor excitement.

According to Cabela’s Small Package Logistics Manager, Cyndi Janousek, they saved “significant dollars” from the adoption of this strategy.

“I congratulate Cabela’s for having recognized the vital importance of innovation, teamwork, communications and customer satisfaction using the mail,” said Susan Plonkey, USPS vice president, customer service.

Cabela’s Small Package Logistics Supervisor Kari Sprenger was a panelist for the 'Peer to Peer Symposium' at the Anaheim National Postal Forum, where she touted the benefits and value of Priority Mail and Priority Mail Flat Rate Boxes. Sprenger said that she appreciates the support Cabela’s receives locally from Sidney Postmaster Kenneth Schneider and his employees.

The National Postal Forum is the mailing industry’s premier trade show and event. More than 7,000 industry professionals attend the four-day conference that features 140 workshops and special sessions, four symposiums and 13 professional certificate programs.

An independent federal agency, the U.S. Postal Service is the only delivery service that visits every address in the nation — 146 million homes and businesses. It has 37,000 retail locations and relies on the sale of postage, products and services to pay for operating expenses, not tax dollars. The Postal Service has annual revenues of $75 billion and delivers nearly half the world’s mail.
