2008 NALC Food Drive kicks off at Children’s Museum

GREENSBORO — The National Association of Letter Carriers of Greensboro, Branch 630, will kick off its 16th Annual National Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive at the Greensboro Children’s Museum, 220 North Church Street on Tuesday, April 22, 5 pm. Children are admitted free with five canned goods.

This year’s NALC – U.S. Postal Service Food Drive will take place in Greensboro, and throughout the country, on Saturday, May 10 from 9 am – 5 pm. On that day, postal customers are asked to place their food donations near their mail receptacles by 9 am. City letter carriers will collect the food, which will be used to replenish local pantries such as the Salvation Army and Urban Ministries of Greensboro.

This event is the largest one-day food drive in the country, with more than 70.7 million pounds of food being collected nationally in 2007. – the fourth consecutive year that more than 70 million pounds has been delivered to local food banks, pantries and shelters. Foods needed most are canned soups, cereals, canned meats, canned fruits and vegetables. No perishables or food in glass containers will be accepted.

“We are proud to be able to step up and help the community in which so many of us live and work in,” said Darlene Evans, Greensboro NALC Food Drive Coordinator. “We are very grateful to the Children’s Museum for joining us in this extremely worthy cause.”

Among the national and local sponsors for the program are Campbell’s Soup, Hanes Lineberry Funeral Homes, WQMG-FM Radio and the United Way. For more information on the kickoff event or the Food Drive, please call Darlene Evans (336-965-1583).
