The Postal Service offers the following advice to customers mailing tax returns:

  • Use pre-addressed envelopes if possible. Take special care to ensure that handwritten envelopes are legible.
  • Include a return address.
  • Affix sufficient First Class postage. IRS does not pay postage due. Many returns contain several forms and weigh more than one ounce. Scales and Automated Postal Centers (APC) are available at many Post Office locations to weigh mail.
  • Avoid the last minute rush at the Post Office. Mail returns early in the day.
  • Customers depositing returns in a collection box should make sure they are deposited before the last collection time listed on the box.
  • Customers can call 1-800-ASK-USPS or visit www.usps.com for Post Office locations offering extended services.

An independent federal agency, the U.S. Postal Service is the only delivery service that visits every address in the nation, 146 million homes and businesses, six days a week. It has 37,000 retail locations and relies on the sale of postage, products, and services to pay for operating expenses, not tax dollars. The Postal Service has annual revenues of $75 billion and delivers nearly half the world’s mail.
