WILMINGTON, NC— As the U.S. Postal Service prepares for its busiest mailing day of the year, shoppers are scrambling to send their holiday gifts and cards in time for Christmas.

The Postal Service expects to deliver 16.6 billion letters, packages and cards between Thanksgiving and Christmas. The busiest mailing day is expected to be Monday, Dec. 14, when 839 million cards and letters will be processed, nearly double the average daily volume. The busiest delivery day will be Wednesday, Dec. 16.
