The “Ed Sullivan Show” comes to Greensboro Post Office!

Talent show highlights Early TV Memories stamp ceremony

GREENSBORO, NC—So you think you’ve got talent? The U.S. Postal Service wants to find out in a new version of an old, classic TV variety show, and invites singers, dancers, comedians, poets and other performers with talent to come and get “discovered.”

On Friday, September 4, 2009, Greensboro Main Post Office presents “The Ed Sullivan Show”, showcasing talent from throughout the Triad Area, with prizes for the top two performers. The Show is part of the dedication ceremony for the newly issued “Early TV Memories stamps, which commemorate 20 great shows from TV’s golden age of the 1950s. The event will be held in the Post Office lobby, 201 N. Murrow Boulevard beginning at 11 am.

All those interested in participating in this “talent show” must call the Postmaster’s office, 336-370-4693 to register before September 1. Each performance is limited to three minutes each, a karaoke machine will be available if needed, and only the first ten participants to register will be accepted. Gift cards will be presented to the first and second place winners.

“For more than half a century, Americans have turned to television for entertainment and information,” said Ronnie White, Greensboro Postmaster. “To those watching in its early days, TV offered the additional excitement of the new. The Ed Sullivan Show always presented new and exciting talent, like the Beatles, the Supremes and so many more great stars, so this is a great chance for us to go back in time while celebrating the talent of today.”

The stamps recognize The Adventures of Ozzie & Harriet; Alfred Hitchcock Presents; Dinah Shore Show; Dragnet; Ed Sullivan Show; George Burns & Gracie Allen Show; Hopalong Cassidy; The Honeymooners; Howdy Doody; I Love Lucy; Kukla, Fran and Ollie; Lassie; The Lone Ranger; Perry Mason; Phil Silvers Show; The Red Skelton Show; Texaco Star Theater; The Tonight Show; Twilight Zone; and You Bet Your Life.

This event is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served, and a limited number of commemorative cachets will be made available for collectors highlighting the event.
