Judge Richard B. Allsbrook to be Honored at
Roanoke Rapids Post Office July 20

ROANOKE RAPIDS, NC — A ceremony dedicating the Roanoke Rapids Post Office in honor of the late former Superior Court Judge Richard B. Allsbrook will be held Monday, July 20.

The public ceremony begins at 10 am in the lobby of the Post Office, located at 725 Roanoke Avenue. The program will include U.S. Representative G.K. Butterfield (District 1), who authored the legislation that led to the name change for the Post Office building in Roanoke Rapids. Public Law 110-226, signed by President George W. Bush on August 12, 2008, officially authorized the rededication of the Roanoke Rapids Post Office as the “Judge Richard B. Allsbrook Post Office Building.” Allsbrook was a Superior Court Judge for the 6th Judicial District in Roanoke Rapids for 22 years before retiring in 2000.

Also on the program will be Mayor Drewery Beale, Postmaster Kevin Duskie, Postal Service Customer Relations Manager Randall Anderson, and other public officials.

In his formative years, Richard Allsbrook attended Roanoke Rapids High School, University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill (B.A.) and UNC School of Law before serving four years in the U.S. Navy as Second Lieutenant. He returned home to practice law with his father in the firm of Allsbrook, Benton and Knott, and after 20 years was appointed resident superior court judge for the Sixth Judicial District in 1978.

Over the next 22 years, he earned a reputation as a fair, compassionate jurist known for being well-prepared, respectful and courteous. He was also well-known in his community, serving in the local Kiwanis Club and Chamber of Commerce, and receiving awards from the Jaycees and the Boy Scouts. After retiring in 2000, he continued working as a mediator in the North Carolina Judicial System. He passed away in October 2007.

The public is invited to attend the dedication, which will include a table with commemorative cancellation cachet envelopes.
