Cooper stamp to be dedicated at Juneteenth in Durham

DURHAM — The Triangle Cultural Awareness Foundation and the U.S. Postal Service will dedicate the newest entry of the Black Heritage stamp series, the 44-cent commemorative postage stamp featuring Anna Julia Cooper, noted educator, scholar, and civil rights activist in the 19th and 20th centuries. Cooper’s life and legacy will be explored through words, music and images; she was a member of the inaugural class at St. Augustine’s (Raleigh) in 1868, later taught there and in D.C., and soon after became the first African-American woman to earn a Ph.D while in France. This exciting dedication event will be held during the 5th Annual Durham Juneteenth Celebration and Unity March, Forest Hills Park on University Drive in Durham, on Saturday, June 20, 2009, beginning at 12 noon. This event is free and open to the public; for information, visit www.durhamjuneteenth.com or call (919) 680-0465 or (336) 668-1257.
