Saint Augustine’s Cooper stamp dedication set for June 18

RALEIGH — Saint Augustine’s College and the U.S. Postal Service will dedicate the newest entry of the Black Heritage stamp series, the 44-cent commemorative postage stamp featuring Saint Augustine’s own Anna Julia Cooper, noted educator, scholar, and civil rights activist in the 19th and 20th centuries. Cooper’s life and legacy will be explored through words, music and images; she was a member of the inaugural class at St. Augustine’s in 1868, later taught there and in D.C., and soon after became the first African-American woman to earn a Ph.D while in France. This historic dedication event will be held at the campus, 1315 Oakwood Avenue, on Thursday, June 18, 2009, beginning at 11:30 am. This event is free and open to the public; for information, contact (919) 516-4090 or (336) 668-1257.
