“Honest John” Mayodan postal worker honored Wednesday

MAYODAN, NC — The Postal Service will recognize letter carrier Tony Joyce Wednesday for his actions leading to the return of cash with no identification found on his route. The recognition event will take place at Mayodan Post Office, 1000 W. Main Street on Wednesday, April 22, 2009 at 8:30 a.m.

Upon delivering mail one day recently, Joyce, a resident of Madison, found a money clip containing $300 with no ID on the curb in front of a customer’s residence. He made several attempts during the day to contact the resident owner, who he knew from the route. He finally reached the owner, Glenn Joyce (no relation) that evening and determined he did in fact lose the clip, and had it returned.

“Our letter carriers know the community, know the people, and know this town,” said Postmaster Al Morrison. “It doesn’t surprise me at all that Mr. Joyce responded in the way he did. We are very proud of him — he is a credit to the U.S. Postal Service.”
