Postal Employees to Accept Tax Returns Until Midnight at Cleveland St. Plant

Hard Copy Tax Returns – With Proper Postage – Will be Collected Curbside

KANSAS CITY, MO — U.S. Postal Service employees at the agency’s Kansas City, MO Processing & Distribution Center at 1700 Cleveland St. will again offer area residents “drive-thru” collection of tax returns on Wednesday, April 15 beginning at 5 p.m. until midnight. All tax returns must bear proper postage.

However, the Post Office will not offer extended retail window service hours to accommodate last-minute tax filers. “Like other businesses, the Postal Service has been hammered by the tough economy,” said John Morgan, Kansas City, MO’s acting postmaster. “We simply can not justify the added expense.”

In the Kansas City metro area, the Shawnee Mission, Kansas Main Post Office will be open the latest on April 15 – 7:30 p.m., which is their regular retail closing time Monday through Friday. The Shawnee Mission Post Office is located at 6029 Broadmoor St., one block east of Metcalf.

An independent federal agency, the U.S. Postal Service is the only delivery service that reaches every address in the nation, 149 million residences, businesses and Post Office Boxes, six days a week. It has 34,000 retail locations and relies on the sale of postage, products and services, not tax dollars, to pay for operating expenses. Named the Most Trusted Government Agency five consecutive years by the Ponemon Institute, the Postal Service has annual revenue of $75 billion and delivers nearly half the world’s mail.
