Automated Postal Center friend of Tax Day procrastinators

Are you worrying about filing your state and federal income taxes before the clock strikes 12 (midnight, that is) on Tuesday, April 15?

Fret not. Eighteen Post Offices in the Massachusetts Postal District can help take care of your needs through their 24-hours-a-day, seven-days-a-week Automated Postal Center (APC).

APCs is equipped to handle most mailing transactions, including certified mail with return receipt, a service many last minute filers seek.

Postal officials hope that most people will mail their tax returns early and not wait until the last minute, but for those who cannot get to a Post Office in person before the service windows close for the day,  the APC may be a solution.

Customers can use the APC with a credit or debit card and can add the special certified service when prompted by the machine to “add a service.”

APCs provide easy access to postal products and services such a buying stamps; weighing, calculating and purchasing postage for items weighing up to 70 pounds; sending items via Express Mail, Priority Mail, First-Class Mail and parcel post and looking up ZIP Codes.

An independent federal agency, the U.S. Postal Service is the only delivery service that visits every address in the nation — 146 million homes and businesses. It has 37,000 retail locations and relies on the sale of postage, products and services to pay for operating expenses, not tax dollars. The Postal Service has annual revenues of $75 billion and delivers nearly half the world’s mail.
