USPS Honors Heroes and Hard Workers
Postal Workers Celebrated for Dedication and Service
LOUISVILLE, KY — No matter how you look at it, the Postal Service is part of every Americans’ life. We deliver to every address, in every neighborhood, in every town and city all year round.
Our employees work around the clock processing letters and packages. Our retail associates save customers money by offering unbeatable shipping services. And our letter carriers travel the distance – through rain, sleet and snow — to make sure your mail is delivered safely and in a timely manner.
USPS has some of the best and brightest employees in the world, and right here in Kentucky and Indiana, our employees go above and beyond their regular job duties to help customers and, in some instances, total strangers. Some of those employees include:
- Fern Creek Letter Carrier Jim Pace noticed one of his customer’s mailboxes was leaning precariously toward the street. One evening after his shift ended, he drove back to the customer’s house and asked permission to fix the box. The customer assumed Pace was doing this to earn a little extra money but that wasn’t the case. Over the years, Jim has taken it upon himself to repair customers’ “sick” mailboxes along his extensive mail route.
- Margaret Ross, a mail processing/distribution clerk at the Pleasure Ridge Park Post Office who is deaf and mute, noticed a co-worker having difficulty breathing and notified her supervisor. It was later determined the employee had suffered a mild heart attack. More recently, she witnessed two young girls and a mother hit by a driver fleeing the police in downtown Louisville. Margaret sat on the curb holding the injured mother’s hand, trying to console her until emergency officials arrived. The mother’s daughter died at the scene and the little girl's best friend died in the emergency room. Margaret reported for work at 5 a.m. the next morning, visibly shaken, but still performing her duties getting the day’s mail worked and distributed to the carriers for delivery to our customers. If there is a standard for “hard worker,” Margaret is the example.
- Mount Washington retail window clerk Tom Greenwell has a penchant for making people laugh. For example, if he’s in the back of the Post Office working and spots a customer, he will say "We've got a live one!" A customer will walk up and say "What kind of stamps do you have today?" and he will say "Well, we're pushing 42 centers today and it seems to be going quite well." After renting a Post Office Box, Tom will say "I hope you get good mail!" Customers often ask Tom "Why are you so happy all the time?" His reply: "It's the medication we take, postal medication that is." Tom is a true hero to his co-workers by making work fun.
More than 25 postal employees will be honored at a luncheon Thursday, Dec. 4 at the Kentucky Derby Museum, 704 Central Ave. in Louisville as a way of saying thank you to these exceptional employees. Guest speakers will include University of Louisville Hall of Famer Robbie Valentine and WAVE-TV’s Dawne Gee.
We hope you can join us when we pay tribute to these special heroes and hard workers of the U.S. Postal Service.
