Power Restored at More Post Offices

Mail Delivery Continues at 11 Offices Still in the Dark

Operations are slowly returning to normal at Post Offices across the Kentuckiana District as utility companies continue to repair downed power lines and blown transformers caused by Sunday’s windstorm.

Despite massive power outages, school and business closings and extensive damage in some areas, the Postal Service has continued to make deliveries — even if it meant sorting mail by way of flashlights and battery-operated lanterns at some offices.

“The mail flow never stopped at the more than 100 post offices impacted by the storm,” said Kentuckiana District Manager, Ann Wright. “We missed very few deliveries and those were only because businesses were closed.”

Wright credits the dedication and perseverance of Postal employees for little or no disruptions in mail flow. “We had very few employees who could not report to work even though hundreds of them were without power and sustained some damage in their own homes.  This really demonstrates our commitment to mail delivery.”

While many offices experienced no more than a loss of electricity or broken tree limbs, the Paducah Processing and Distribution Facility suffered significant damage to its exterior when a large outside air duct cover was torn off the roof by the storm. Fortunately, there were no injuries.

An independent federal agency, the U.S. Postal Service is the only delivery service that visits every address in the nation — 146 million homes and businesses. It has 37,000 retail locations and relies on the sale of postage, products and services to pay for operating expenses, not tax dollars. The Postal Service has annual revenues of $75 billion and delivers nearly half the world’s mail.
