U.S. Postal Service Needs Your Help

Customers Asked to Keep Areas Around Mailboxes Clear

As the cleanup efforts continue around Kentucky and Indiana from last week’s devastating ice storm, the U.S. Postal Service is asking for the public’s help in getting the mail delivered.

Customers are reminded to keep the approach to their mailboxes clear, especially along rural routes.

“We are making every attempt to deliver mail,” said Kentuckiana District Manager Chris Christenbury. “However, we have received reports that people are piling tree limbs next to their mailboxes, making it difficult for our carriers to complete deliveries.

“I realize many people lost power because of the storm and are trying to get their lives back in order,” he said. “But if mail service is to continue uninterrupted, we ask that they take a moment to clean around their mailboxes.

“Our carriers want to deliver your mail and we want to keep our carriers safe,” Christenbury added.

The Kentuckiana District, which serves more than 700 offices in most of Kentucky and a portion of Southern Indiana, continues to clean up from the storm. As of today, 60 offices are still without power and more than 100 offices have no phone or Internet service.

Although some deliveries were missed in the hardest hit areas, carriers across the district have made a monumental effort to deliver the mail.

Besides sorting mail by head lights and flash lights at many offices, some carriers brought in their own chainsaws and generators to help clean up debris and provide electricity at their job sites.

“Our carriers know the importance of getting the mail out,” said Christenbury. “These heroic deeds demonstrate our commitment to mail delivery.”

Customers with inquires about their mail service can call 1-800-ASK-USPS for information and updates.

An independent federal agency, the U.S. Postal Service is the only delivery service that visits every address in the nation — 146 million homes and businesses. It has 37,000 retail locations and relies on the sale of postage, products and services to pay for operating expenses, not tax dollars. The Postal Service has annual revenues of $75 billion and delivers nearly half the world’s mail.
