Governor to Unveil New Kansas State Flag Stamp

What:
Unveiling of enlargement of new Kansas State Flag postage stamp.

Who:
Kansas Governor Kathleen Sebelius, USPS District Manager Michael C. Holloway, and Topeka Postmaster B. Steven Pinkerton.

When:
1:30 p.m., Sept. 15, 2008

Where:
Governor’s Ceremonial Office, Room 245-N, State Capitol, Topeka, Kan.

Background:
Over the next three years the Postal Service will issue a stamp series entitled Flags of Our Nation, which features 60 stamps – the Stars and Stripes, the 50 state flags, five territorial flags and the District of Columbia flag. The first set of 10 stamps was issued earlier this year. The second set of 10 flag stamps is being issued this month and includes the District of Columbia and the states of Florida through Kansas.

In addition to the flag art, each stamp design includes artwork that provides a “snapshot view” of the state or other area represented by a particular flag. In most cases, an everyday scene or activity is shown. The Kansas stamp features the state’s flag and a farm scene with trees, buildings and silos.

The Kansas stamp is being sold as part of the second set of 10 stamps in the Flags of Our Nation series, and cannot be purchased separately. Five stamps from each state are included in a 50 stamp coil, which sells for $21. The stamps are available at any Post Office.

A Special Kansas Flags of Our Nation Postmark will be available beginning Sept. 15, at the Topeka Main Post Office. The Postmark is free and can be affixed to virtually anything with First-Class postage.

The Postmark is also available by mail. Customers may affix first-class postage to envelopes of their choice, address the envelopes (to themselves or others), and place them in a larger envelope addressed to: Flags of Our Nation Postmark, 424 S Kansas Ave., Topeka, KS 66603-9998. After applying the postmark, the Postal Service will return the envelopes through the mail. Requests must be postmarked no later than Oct. 15, 2008.

It has 37,000 retail locations and relies on the sale of postage, products and services to pay for operating expenses, not tax dollars. The Postal Service has annual revenues of $75 billion and delivers nearly half the world’s mail.
