Pay tribute to those on active duty this holiday season

Local Post Office offers space on bulletin board to post addresses

NEW PALESTINE, IN —Americans pay tribute to those who currently serve or have served their country in a number of ways.  To assist those who wish to send letters and “care packages” to service persons on active duty, the New Palestine Postmaster has dedicated a bulletin board in the Post Office lobby for families and friends of service members to post their pictures and their mailing address.

“Letters and “care packages” can be a big morale boost,” says Tony Thomas, Postmaster, New Palestine, IN. “We’ve been asked by the Defense Department to not accept mail addressed to ‘Any Service member.’ The bulletin board lets local residents send mail to service members from our community. “

And for those wanting to send a package, the New Palestine Postmaster said one of the best deals around the Priority Mail Large Flat Rate Box. Boxes going to Army Post Office (APO) and Fleet Post Office (FPO) addresses also receive a two dollar discount. The cost to APO/FPO addresses is $10.95 at the retail counter and $10.50 on line at usps.com.

“Our Military Care Kit, or ‘Mili-kit’ make it easy to send care packages to someone stationed overseas,” said Thomas. “The kit contains three flat rate boxes, two cube boxes, nine address labels, and 16 customs forms.”

The kits may be ordered by calling the USPS Expedited Package Supply Center at 1-800-610-8734. There is no charge for the kit.

An independent federal agency, the U.S. Postal Service is the only delivery service that visits every address in the nation — 146 million homes and businesses. It has 37,000 retail locations and relies on the sale of postage, products and services to pay for operating expenses, not tax dollars. The Postal Service has annual revenues of $75 billion and delivers nearly half the world’s mail.
