Chicago Post Office to Hold Emergency Preparedness Drill September 6

Postal Inspection Service, local first responders to take part

CHICAGO, IL — The Chicago District of the U.S. Postal Service will conduct an emergency preparedness exercise Saturday, September 6, from 4 to 6 p.m., at the Main Post Office, 433 W. Harrison St.

This will be an evacuation drill, with the participation of the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, City of Chicago, Office of Emergency Management and Communications, Chicago Fire Department, Chicago Police Department, Chicago Department of Public Health, and the American Red Cross.

As part of this exercise, emergency vehicles will be in place in the vicinity of the Main Post Office throughout the afternoon. The exercise is being conducted to provide realistic experience for Postal, fire, police, public health and emergency management personnel. There is no risk or threat to the public.

The following streets will be closed from 4 pm to 6 pm that day:

  • W. Harrison St. between Jefferson and Wells
  • S. Clinton St from Van Buren to Taylor
  • S. Canal St. from Van Buren to Taylor
  • W Polk St. from Jefferson to Canal

The Cardiss Collins Postal Store will remain open during the drill to serve customers. Customers will not have to evacuate the public area during the drill.

This advance notice is provided to assure the community the drill will be a training exercise and not a live emergency.

Note to editors: Media covering the event will be staged at S. Canal Street between Taylor and Roosevelt.

An independent federal agency, the U.S. Postal Service is the only delivery service that visits every address in the nation — 146 million homes and businesses. It has 37,000 retail locations and relies on the sale of postage, products and services to pay for operating expenses, not tax dollars. The Postal Service has annual revenues of $75 billion and delivers nearly half the world’s mail.
