Chicago Post Office: 96% On-Time Delivery

All-time best score for Chicago

CHICAGO— Local First-Class Mail in Chicago was delivered overnight 96 percent of the time, according to an independent survey of postal performance in the third quarter of the fiscal year, the U.S. Postal Service reported today.

The measurement tracks mail sent from the 606/607/608 ZIP Code area to an address within that area.  The 96% score for the period from April to June, measured by IBM Global Business Services, is a three-point improvement over the same period last year.  The 96% score is the highest ever posted by the Chicago District for overnight delivery of local First-Class Mail.

The district extended its track record of continuous mail processing and delivery improvement in the just-completed quarter.  Two-day service improved to 95 percent on-time, a five-point increase from last year, and three-day service improved to 92 percent on-time, a seven-point increase over the same period last year.

“The many steps we have taken to improve our service continue to bear fruit,” district manager/postmaster Gloria Tyson said.  “Our employees are delivering quality and excellence to their customers.”

The delivery area measured by the performance score includes more than 1.2 million homes, businesses and Post Office boxes in the city of Chicago and six surrounding suburbs. IBM’s process measures First-Class Mail from the time it is dropped into a collection box until the time it is delivered.

“I am proud of the excellent work our employees have done,” Tyson said.  “I know that we will continue to seek ways to improve our service, and deliver the value and results our customers expect and deserve.”

An independent federal agency, the U.S. Postal Service is the only delivery service that visits every address in the nation — 146 million homes and businesses. It has 37,000 retail locations and relies on the sale of postage, products and services to pay for operating expenses, not tax dollars. The Postal Service has annual revenues of $75 billion and delivers nearly half the world’s mail.
