Premium Forwarding Service lets customers take mail with them
Mail forwarded weekly to temporary addresses
CHICAGO, IL — Many college students are off to pursue summer adventures in another city or across the country. Families are planning their annual getaways to summer homes and timeshares. High-mileage business travelers are combining vacation time with travel to meetings and conventions.
What happens to their mail while they’re gone?
Longer-term travelers can take their mail with them when they travel, by signing up for Premium Forwarding Service from the U.S. Postal Service®.
Anyone who is going to be away from home for at least two weeks, or for as long as one year, is eligible to sign up for Premium Forwarding Service. The customer’s regular Post Office takes all of the mail sent to the permanent address, and sends it to a temporary address by Priority Mail® once per week. Customers pay a one-time enrollment fee of $10.00, and weekly reshipment fees of $11.95.
Items sent to the permanent address by Express Mail® and Registered Mail™ and those requiring a signature are sent ahead separately whenever they arrive. Some larger items will be shipped separately with postage due at the same mail class and postage rate under which they were originally sent.
Premium Forwarding Service offers advantages for customers who will be gone for extended periods of time:
- The customer’s permanent address does not change, and the temporary address is not provided to mailers.
- Customers won’t miss important mail while they’re away from home.
- Customers won’t have to impose on neighbors or loved ones to pick up their mail or pay their bills.
- Customers can enjoy their magazine and newspaper subscriptions instead of having them pile up while they are gone.
- Premium Forwarding Service is reliable. The week’s mail goes out the same day every week on a regular schedule, and will arrive in 2-to-3 business days.
Customers can sign up for Premium Forwarding Service at their regular Chicago District Post Office. For more information, visit www.usps.com/receive/premiumforwarding.
