Fort Dearborn, Wicker Park Addresses to Receive New ZIP Codes

ZIP Code 60642 added to Wicker Park, 60654 expanded in Fort Dearborn

CHICAGO, IL — The Chicago District of the U.S .Postal Service is creating a new ZIP Code for some addresses currently in 60622, and reassigning some addresses in 60610 to the little-used 60654 ZIP Code.

Effective July 1, all addresses in ZIP Code 60610 on W. Chicago Avenue and south of W. Chicago Avenue will be assigned to the 60654 ZIP Code.  In 60622, all addresses east of N. Ashland Avenue will be assigned to the new 60642 ZIP Code.  Addresses on N. Ashland Avenue will remain in the 60622 ZIP Code.

13, 245 addresses will go from 60610 to 60654, and 10, 553 addresses will go from 60622 to 60642.

“The Postal Service relies on automated sorting to nine-digit ZIP Code areas to process mail volume efficiently,” Mike Armstrong, Chicago district operations programs support manager, explained.  “With the dramatic growth in Fort Dearborn and Wicker Park over the past few years, the supply of available nine-digit combinations in 60610 and 60622 is virtually exhausted.  Assigning addresses to the little-used 60654 ZIP Code and the new 60642 ZIP Code will help the Chicago District continue to process mail to these customers efficiently as these areas continue to grow.”

Customers can start using their new ZIP Code on July 1.  The Chicago District will continue to deliver mail addressed to the old ZIP Code for one year after the change goes into effect, through July 1, 2009.  Major business mailers, including banks, utilities and magazine publishers, will automatically be notified of the change.  Customers are asked to notify relatives, friends, and other personal correspondents of their new ZIP code.

Customers can continue to use their current envelopes, letterhead and stationery with their old ZIP Code, since the district will still deliver mail with the old ZIP Code on it for the next year.  Armstrong advises customers who need to get new stationery to put their new ZIP Code on it.

Customers will continue to be served by their current Post Office.  The Fort Dearborn Station will serve both 60610 and 60654.  The Wicker Park Station will serve both 60622 and 60642.

Customers whose ZIP Code is changing are being notified by letter this week. A 60622/60642 map will be on display at the Wicker Park Station.  A 60610/60654 map will be on display at the Fort Dearborn Station and the Merchandise Mart and Ontario Street finance stations.

“Our goal to put these changes into effect as smoothly and seamlessly as possible,” Armstrong stressed. Customers with questions about the changes can contact the district’s Address Management Systems department at (312) 983-8332 for further information.

An independent federal agency, the U.S. Postal Service is the only delivery service that visits every address in the nation — 146 million homes and businesses. It has 37,000 retail locations and relies on the sale of postage, products and services to pay for operating expenses, not tax dollars. The Postal Service has annual revenues of $75 billion and delivers nearly half the world’s mail.
