Mailing Your Tax Return

Boise, ID — Mailing your tax return this year? If you're waiting until April 15 to mail, the Boise Post Office offers these mailing tips.

If taxes are ready to mail and just need to be dropped off, all collection boxes and Post Office locations have the last collection time clearly marked. After the last listed collection times, the only way to deposit mail and get an April 15 postmark is to use the collection boxes outside the mail processing center at 2201 S Cole Road, which will be accepting mail until midnight. No postage is available for sale at the mail processing center.

The Ada County Highway District will work with the Postal Service to provide easy access to the Cole Road facility on April 15. Traffic is usually directed south out of the postal facility onto South Cole Road to reduce congestion around this area.

If you're bringing taxes in to the Post Office to send via certified mail, have your documents ready and in an envelope. Upon arrival, pick up the certified form and return receipt form and complete them before getting to the counter. This will expedite the process for you and all other customers in line.

A credit or debit card can be used at an Automated Postal Center (APC) to mail a certified letter. APCs are available at the Main Office, Cole Village Station and Five Mile Station. Mail postmarked by the APC still must be deposited by the last collection time posted. Check www.usps.com for the street locations for these stations as well as the area's five Contract Postal Units, which provide postal services at postal prices. Peak postal hours are 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Visiting the Post Office at other times will usually result in a quicker visit.

The Idaho State Tax Commission and IRS will be in the lobby of the Main Post Office at 770 S 13th to provide information. While they will not be assisting with tax preparation as in years past, they will be available to answer questions from 8 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. on April 15. No tax forms for State or Federal filing are available in Post Office lobbies, except for those that the State Tax Commission and IRS may have available on Tax Day.

An independent federal agency, the U.S. Postal Service is the only delivery service that visits every address in the nation, 146 million homes and businesses, six days a week. It has 37,000 retail locations and relies on the sale of postage, products, and services to pay for operating expenses, not tax dollars. The Postal Service has annual revenues of $75 billion and delivers nearly half the world’s mail.
