Postman May or May Not Ring Twice – But Not After 5:30 p.m.

Postal Service’s Hawkeye District Letter Carriers Plan for Early Deliveries

Des Moines, Iowa – Doug Morrow, the manager of the Postal Service’s Des Moines-based Hawkeye District, has asked more than 4,000 rural and city letter carriers to deliver mail no later than 5:30 p.m. each day.

“In these challenging economic times, the Postal Service must do everything we can to provide efficient and affordable service,” said Morrow.  “We serve more than 1.4 million residential and business customers in Iowa and the Quad Cities, and timely mail delivery is a fundamental customer expectation.”

Morrow recently encouraged the District’s 7,300 employees to look for opportunities to grow postal revenue during the current economic downturn.  The Postal Service does not receive tax dollars for its daily operations.  “Small businesses and home offices are the single largest growth sector in American business today – and all of them are located on our delivery routes. Each carrier is a link between these customers and potential new business for the Postal Service,” said Morrow.

Morrow reminded postal employees that customers want consistent, timely delivery, and that most businesses are closed after 5 p.m. “We want to take advantage of our presence in more than 800 Iowa and Illinois communities six days a week,” he said.

An independent federal agency, the U.S. Postal Service is the only delivery service that visits every address in the nation — 146 million homes and businesses. It has 37,000 retail locations and relies on the sale of postage, products and services to pay for operating expenses, not tax dollars. The Postal Service has annual revenues of $75 billion and delivers nearly half the world’s mail.
