U.S. Postal Service: Flooding Won’t Delay Mail Service

Some Mail Diverted to Alternate Post Office Branch Locations for Customer Pick Up

Cedar Rapids, Iowa —The Cedar Rapids Post Office, 615 6th Ave SE, has been evacuated because of the flooding in Cedar County, but beginning today, mail will be made available for customers after 11 a.m. each day to collect at alternate locations.

“Our employees have done a tremendous job of moving the mail, and we are doing everything possible to get our customers’ mail into their hands,” said Cedar Rapids Postmaster Paula Prochazka. “Postal Service employees have been sorting and delivering mail wherever we have access, and it is safe to do so.”

In Cedar Rapids, the hardest hit by the floods, virtually all residents and business will receive mail delivery, either from their letter carrier, in their Post Office Box, or at a temporary alternate Post Office established for evacuated communities.

Mail for 52401 and 52403 ZIP Codes that is undeliverable due to property damage will be held for pick-up at Northeast Station, 1380 60th St NE.

Post Office Box mail for 52406 and 52407 should be picked up at Northeast Station, 1380 60th St NE.

Mail for 52404 and 52405 ZIP Codes that is undeliverable due to property damage will be held for pick-up at West Station, 1930 Wiley Blvd SW.

It is especially important that all residents check their mail daily, especially customers who have Post Office Boxes. Accumulated mail volume is filling mail receptacles beyond capacity.

Letter carriers will continue to deliver in those areas of Cedar Rapids that have not been affected by the flooding.

Managers at the Hawkeye District office continue to assess transportation and delivery routes in the affected areas. Each of Iowa’s approximately 800 Post Offices operates with a “Continuity of Operations Plant” (COOP), which provides for alternate transportation, delivery, mail processing and Retail service options in the event of a natural disaster.

An independent federal agency, the U.S. Postal Service is the only delivery service that visits every address in the nation — 146 million homes and businesses. It has 37,000 retail locations and relies on the sale of postage, products and services to pay for operating expenses, not tax dollars. The Postal Service has annual revenues of $75 billion and delivers nearly half the world’s mail.
