USPS Suspends Collection of Mail from Blue Boxes in Flood Plain

Des Moines Post Office Expects Near 100 Percent Downtown Deliveries on Friday

Des Moines, Iowa — Des Moines Postmaster Kyle Collinsworth has instructed letter carriers whose territory is included in the city’s 500-year flood plain to make a final collection of letter mail deposited in the familiar blue mail collection boxes. The plan will affect about a dozen mail collection boxes.

Only downtown Des Moines’ Capital Square Post Office, located at 400 Locust St., was forced to close early today. The Capital Square office normally stays open until 5 p.m., and does not have hours on Saturday.

The Des Moines Main Post Office, which is located on the western edge of the flood plain at 1165 2nd Ave., is not expected to be affected.

“We’ll make a final collection of mail this afternoon from the flood-impacted areas, and then bolt the collection boxes shut,” said Collinsworth. “We’re asking our customers to bring their outgoing mail to a Post Office that has not been impacted by the flooding, or to one of the many convenient Contract Postal Units.” Contract Postal Units in the Des Moines metro area include:
