Postal Service Suspends Collection of Mail from Blue Collection Boxes in Cedar Rapids, Cedar Falls and Waterloo

Customers Are Asked to Drop Mail at Nearby Post Offices or Contract Post Offices

Cedar Rapids, Iowa —Due to continued flooding in east-central Iowa, the U.S. Postal Service has suspended the collection of mail from its familiar blue collection boxes located in the Iowa communities of Cedar Rapids, Cedar Falls and Waterloo.

To locate the nearest Post Office or Contract Postal Unit (typically located in a local grocery or convenience store) that will accept outgoing mail, customers can log onto the Postal Service's Website at http://www.usps.com, or call toll-free 1-800-ASK-USPS (800-275-8777).

"Our employees will make every effort to safely collect mail that has already been dropped in these collection boxes," said Doug Morrow, manager of the agency's Des Moines-based Hawkeye District. "Where it is safe to do so, we hope to resume our normal mail collection schedules next week."

An independent federal agency, the U.S. Postal Service is the only delivery service that visits every address in the nation — 146 million homes and businesses. It has 37,000 retail locations and relies on the sale of postage, products and services to pay for operating expenses, not tax dollars. The Postal Service has annual revenues of $75 billion and delivers nearly half the world’s mail.
