U.S. Postal Service Increases Efforts to Maintain Safe and Secure Mail Service

Waterloo Area Customers are Asked Not to Place Mail in Blue Collection Boxes

WATERLOO, Iowa — After careful consideration of the flood information provided by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, U.S. Postal Inspectors, local, state and federal officials, the Waterloo Post Office is requesting that all mail be brought to a postal facility or Contract Postal Unit. Mail will not be collected from blue collection boxes in the Waterloo area until flood waters have receded.

“Flood conditions in the Waterloo area make it virtually impossible for the collection of mail from blue collection boxes,” said Waterloo Postmaster Greg Barnes. “We are asking the public to bring outgoing mail to a postal facility or to one of our postal contract units.”

The four Waterloo area CPUs include:

An independent federal agency, the U.S. Postal Service is the only delivery service that visits every address in the nation — 146 million homes and businesses. It has 37,000 retail locations and relies on the sale of postage, products and services to pay for operating expenses, not tax dollars. The Postal Service has annual revenues of $75 billion and delivers nearly half the world’s mail.
